The Extremist Groups Respond

February 1st, 2008

It didn’t take long for some of the very people featured on this website to respond to its existence.  We particularly enjoyed Jim Gilchrist’s comment.  He’s a cofounder of the Minuteman Project and one of our Suspect Spokespeople.  Here’s what he told the Associated Press:

Gilchrist called the National Council of La Raza a racial supremacy group that "dwarfs the combination of Black Panthers, KKK, American Indian Movement and Asian gangs."

"I'm exercising free speech and I'm giving my opinion," Gilchrist said. "My son-in-law is Mexican and two of my three grandchildren are half Mexican. The Minuteman Project is comprised of every race color and creed. ... She [Janet Murguía] has a right to her opinion, but she's wrong."

Good thing he doesn’t engage in hate speech.  We still think that Mike Huckabee shouldn’t be accepting the endorsement of someone who says he is “proud to be a vigilante.”

And in the event one might think this is simply an exercise in name-calling, we note some facts.  Evidence supporting the charges made on this site are meticulously documented and presented for visitors to judge for themselves.  By contrast, notice that those like Gilchrist who call NCLR “racist” don’t bother to cite any evidence.  Further, the Minutemen in general and Mr. Gilchrist in particular have been cited as “extremist” by both the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League, two of the country’s most respected observers on these issues.

Also, within hours of the launch of wecanstopthehate.org, members of ALI-PAC (Americans for Legal Immigration), run by William Gheen, who was featured in the “code words” video on this site, posted our website on their page for comment.   We think code words and hate speech pretty much speak for themselves, so you can see what ALI-PAC members had to say here.

We especially enjoyed that when several ALI-PAC members included the address for this website, the site managers promptly disabled it lest anybody actually click through.  Perhaps it’s easier to spout vitriol when you don’t have the facts in front of you.
