TAKE THE HATE OUT OF THE IMMIGRATION DEBATE

Speak Out/Stop Hate Video Contest

August 26th, 2009

When we launched the Wave of Hope campaign to take the hate out of the immigration debate, there were only a couple of people speaking out along with us.  Over the course of the last few months, however, multiple organizations and individuals have taken note of this issue and stepped up to combat hate.  Although this is encouraging, attacks against Latinos are still occurring-there was one on August 14, 2009 in Long Island-and talking heads and politicians have yet to get the message.

It is in this context that our friends at Long Island Wins are launching the Speak Out/Stop Hate video contest.  According to their press release, "Long Island Wins is giving every person with a video camera, a concept, and a desire to ‘Speak Out/Stop Hate' against immigrants the chance to have their voice heard, and to teach others the value of tolerance."

They've issued a call for 30-second videos targeted to middle school and high school students for a contest that runs until midnight on Friday, October 2, 2009.  The prize is a featured showing at the Long Island Latino International Film Festival in November of this year.
