We are deeply appreciative of the Southern Poverty Law Center's (SPLC) piece defending NCLR against an attack by John Derbyshire. But the reason we're posting this is to introduce you to Derbyshire, the British-born longtime columnist for the National Review Online. The SPLC post links to a piece he did five years ago admitting that he—a self-described "mild and tolerant racist" and avowed immigration restrictionist, especially of Hispanic immigration—had once been an illegal immigrant himself.
What is striking is how contemptuous he is of the employers who helped him with his immigration dilemma and of a country that, instead of throwing him out on his ear, provided him with the classic immigrant experience of opportunity and upward mobility. Yet, instead of celebrating his encounter with the American Dream, he mocks it.
And they call us un-American.
